Chickdee, black-Capped

Chickadee, Black-Capped

Cavity nesters related to the Tufted Titmouse, Chickadees are truly altruistic and neighborly creatures. Curious and outgoing, they have been known to befriend strange birds that are sick, hurt, or deformed -- even birds of other species! Chickadees are fairly tolerant of human presence. They do not migrate to warmer climates for the winter. Chickadees eat insects, berries, sunflower seeds, and suet as adults.
The birds in these photos were brought to us after their nest was disturbed by a predator. They were rehabilitated and ultimately released.
